The festival, which started when students of the University of Guanajuato paraded as characters of famed Spanish novelist Miguel de Cervantes in the city's colonial plazas, only started in the early 1970’s. Slowly these plays grew in importance, until the local government took interest. Now the festival is one of international importance, and is a time of art, music, dance, and much more.
